New to Sailing?

Do I need sailing experience to join?

No. We welcome people with all levels of sailing experience, including complete beginners.

Do I need to own a boat?

No. Many members join before owning a boat.

Can I race without owning a boat?

Yes. Club members frequently look for crew, making crewing a great way to get on the water, learn from experienced sailors, and become part of the sailing community.

I've never raced before. Can I still participate?

Absolutely. Many members start with little or no racing experience and learn along the way.

Can I visit before joining?

Yes. We encourage prospective members to contact us, visit the club, and meet members before making a decision.


Membership

Who can join CLSA?

Anyone with an interest in sailing is welcome to inquire about membership.

Are family members included?

Yes. Family members are included under the primary paid membership.

What does membership include?

Membership provides access to club activities, racing opportunities, social events, facilities, and a welcoming sailing community.

How much does membership cost?

Club Life

Is CLSA family-friendly?

Very much so. Many members have children and grandchildren of all ages, and some families represent multiple generations of club membership.

What can younger children do during race days?

The club has a playground and open spaces where children can play and socialize. Many families spend race days together, and children often make friends with other club members' kids.

Can children go sailing?

Yes. Weather permitting, many members take children sailing before or after races, providing a fun introduction to the sport.

Are there social events?

Yes. CLSA hosts social gatherings throughout the year, giving members and families opportunities to connect both on and off the water.


Racing

What kind of racing does CLSA offer?

The club organizes sailboat racing throughout the sailing season.

Can beginners participate in racing?

Yes. Racing is one of the best ways to learn, and experienced members are often willing to help newcomers develop their skills.

Where can I find race schedules and results?

Race schedules, club news, and race results are shared through the club website and member communication channels.


Facilities

Where is CLSA located?

Cowan Lake, Ohio. Enter "Cowan Lake Sailing Association" in Google Maps

Is boat storage available?

Yes. Members have access to year-round outdoor boat storage in the club's designated boneyard area. Boats can be moved to and from the water with relative ease.

What if I've never rigged a sailboat before?

No problem. At the beginning and end of each season, members work together to launch and remove boats. There are always experienced sailors willing to help and teach newcomers.

What facilities are available to members?

Members have access to:


  • Clubhouse with meeting and training space
  • Fully equipped kitchen
  • Shaded outdoor gathering area with tables and seating
  • Fire pit and social areas
  • Restrooms and showers
  • Playground
  • Boat storage area
  • Campground for tents and RVs

Is camping available?

Yes. The club campground is available year-round for members with tents or RVs.

How do members stay informed?

The club uses a dedicated WhatsApp community to share news, updates, race information, and club activities, making communication easy and timely.

Can I help even if I'm new?

Absolutely. New members bring fresh perspectives, skills, and energy. There are many opportunities to contribute and become involved in club activities.
